چکیده

Many problems in multi-agent systems can be described as Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems (Distributed CSPs), where the goal is to nd a set of assignments to variables that satis es all constraints among agents. However, when real-life application problems are formalized as Distributed CSPs, they are often over-constrained and have no solution that satis es all constraints. This paper provides the Distributed Partial Constraint Satisfaction Problem (DPCSP) as a new framework for dealing with over-constrained situations. We also present new algorithms for solving Distributed Maximal Constraint Satisfaction Problems (DMCSPs), which is an important subset of DPCSPs. The algorithms are called the Synchronous Branch and Bound (SBB) and the Iterative Distributed Breakout (IDB). Both algorithms were tested on hard classes of over-constrained random binary Distributed CSPs. The results can be summarized as SBB is preferable when we are mainly concerned with the optimality of a solution, while IDB is preferable when we want to get a nearly optimal solution quickly.

An Approach to Over-constrained Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems: Distributed Hierarchical Constraint Satisfaction

Many problems in multi-agent systems can be described as a distributed CSP. However, some real-life problem can be over-constrained and without a set of consistent variable values when described as a distributed CSP. We have presented a distributed partial CSP for handling such an over-constrained situation and a distributed maximal CSP as a subclass of distributed partial CSP. In this paper, w...

Improving the privacy of the asynchronous partial overlay protocol

Dynamic, partial centralization has received a considerable amount of attention in the distributed problem solving community. As the name implies, this technique works by dynamically identifying portions of a shared problem to centralize in order to speed the problem solving process. Currently, a number of algorithms have been created which employ this simple, yet powerful technique to solve pr...

A hybrid approach to solving coarse-grained DisCSPs

A coarse-grained Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problem (DisCSP) consists of several loosely connected constraint satisfaction subproblems, each assigned to an individual agent. We present Multi-Hyb, a two-phase concurrent hybrid approach for solving DisCSPs. In the first phase, each agent’s subproblem is solved using systematic search which generates the key partial solutions to the globa...

Experimental study of hybrid-type distributed maximal constraint satisfaction algorithm

A constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is a general framework that can formalize various application problems in artificial intelligence. However, practical real-world problems tend to be over-constrained, and the descriptive power of the CSP is not always sufficient in formulating the problems because of various constraints involved. In this paper, we will focus on an important subclass of di...

Distributed University Timetabling with Multiply Sectioned Constraint Networks

Although timetabling has long been studied through constraint satisfaction based techniques, along with many alternatives, only recently work has been reported where distributed timetabling problems (DisTTPs) was studied as distributed constraint satisfaction problems (DisCSPs). We present an alternative method for solving DisTTPs based on multiply sectioned constraint networks (MSCNs). The pro...
